The following has been received from Surrey County Council:
28th August 2008
Park Street
Works in Park Street are substantially
complete. Laing O'Rourke have been tackling the snagging items and defects that
require attention. Items necessary to provide satisfactory operation of the
rising bollard are currently being addressed. It is expected that the bollard
will become operational within the next couple of weeks. Once operational a
permit system will come into effect for authorised users. Buses will be
permitted access until Charles Street opens in the Autumn.
I am aware that there has been one incident of
a bus colliding with one of the granite benches in Park Street while I was on
leave. I am also aware of reports of near misses. Public safety is of prime
importance and both Surrey County Council and Stagecoach buses take the
occurrences very seriously.
It has been decided that buses will remain in
Park Street until Charles Street opens. A report setting out the main
considerations is attached to this email.
Pembroke Broadway
There has been a number of trips and falls by
pedestrians on the temporary footway surface of Pembroke Broadway. This
temporary surface has remained, awaiting the arrival of the new bus shelters. It
has been decided that the areas of footway will be permanently surfaced in an
effort to prevent further injuries. I expect that these works will be carried
out within the next two weeks.
An instruction to order the new shelters has
now been given and it is anticipated that these will arrive on site within the
next 6-8 weeks.
The presence of buses standing in the
carriageway to the east of the The Mall car park has caused problems for drivers
exiting the car park. The bus operators have agreed to 'stand' further west of
the exit maximising the level of visibility available. temporary traffic
management measures will be placed on teh carriageway to help reinforce this. In
the longer term, this problem will disappear as buses will 'stand' to the west
of the car park exit.
Southwell Park Road
The works to the northern footway on Southwell
Park Road have not progressed as quickly as envisaged. The works to the footway
east of the toucan crossing are partly complete allowing the full use of the
northern footway. Works will shortly commence to complete the widening of the
western section of footway between the crossing and Charles Street.
Charles Street
Charles Street will be complete for the opening
of the scheme but it is currently required for the accommodation of site plant
and materials. As the scheme nears the later stages, works to complete the road
will commence.
Lower Charles Street
The section of carriageway between London Road
and the new roundabout has now been surfaced. The new traffic lights will be
switched on Monday 1st September.
Works to construct the roundabout including the
re-configuration of the service yard access is underway.
Southern Road
It has been agreed that temporary barriers will
be situated in Southern Road to address the concerns raised by residents and
Surrey Police over vehicle speeds in the shared surface. SCC has agreed to scope
of these barriers and I hope to see these placed shortly. If successful, the
barriers will be replaced with permanent features.
